If you could cut the cost of your utility bills and get newer more eco friendly appliances would to do so, would you? The City of Savannah was working decrease its carbon footprint and electric utility usage organization wide. As the department analyst, often times how projects came to Dominic were through organizational goals, or departmental goals. In order to help the Mobility and Parking Services aid the city in achieving its goal, Dominic researched the department's electrical usage and what locations were costing the most. The project objective became to decrease the department's electrical consumption by 15% by the end of year.
The outcome of the project resulted in 40% electrical usage decrease by installing motion censor retrofitted LED lights in two of the most utilized parking garages. My role on the project was project manager for the city/department. My responsibilities included providing the research and project charter to the department director, submitting a request for proposals to the Purchasing Department and then to the Mayor and Council for spend approval, getting work permits from both the city's Development Services Department and Traffic Engineering, creating the statement of work with City Attorney's Office, managing the resources/contractor services, and managing tasks according to the project schedule.
Deliverables for Whitaker Street Parking Garage included retrofitting lighting for two floors which totaled of 80 high electric use lights reduced to 40 motion censored LED lights. This portion of the project began in October 2014 and ended in January 2015. The Robinson Parking Garage is a high profile garage used primarily by those of the judicial system and their customers. The Robinson Garage was not appropriately lit and posed safety risks in addition to high electricity consumption due to a 20-year-old lighting system. With a total of 360 lights swapped out for 120 LED lights, the Robinson Garage portion of the project was completed in March of 2015.
