Financial transparency is a hot topic in Dallas. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Dallas began to receive funds from federal and state programs as well as private entities. The impact the pandemic has had on cities across the United States was nearly crippling. As businesses and service providers began to close doors and limit services, Dallas stepped up to the plate to help relieve some of the economic pressures. The city needed a way to demonstrate live what funds it had received and where the funds were expended.
Initially, Dominic served as stakeholder on the broader COVID-19 response team for the city. Within two weeks Dominic was assigned the project of creating a way for Dallas to show what was going on with COVID designated funds. Dominic proposed to his assistant director another dashboard that would list out the funds received and how much, in addition, a visualization that would drill down on each fund and show where the revenue was spent.
Dominic gathered a team consisting of one IT staff person and one data analytics person to help build out the dashboard. Dominic served as the project manager and developer. He was responsible for data extraction, data manipulation, and uploading into a cloud based software, and then providing API .json paths to IT. IT was responsible for creating a webpage hosted on Dallas' SharePoint Designer website, and data analytics was responsible for creating the drill down using PowerBI. The project was completed using a hybrid methodology of waterfall and agile. Click the button below to view the latest updates.
